Giraffe toilet roll character

Duration: any

Age: toddler, child

Skill for Bub: Hand/eye co-ordination, Just for fun, Mind Builder

summary:

Make a giraffe character using simple craft supplies. Then you can have lots of ‘Jungle Fun’.

How does a giraffe look compared with an elephant or zebra? While the difference seems perfectly clear to us, small children may not fully understand the concept. Why not show them visually – and have some fun in the process!  Create these animal figures and discuss what each piece is and how it works as you go along.

Completed Giraffe animal character

You will need:

  • Toilet paper roll or a kitchen paper roll cut down to size.
  • Paints and brushes, or pencils and crayons
(or you can use the colour template)
  • Paddle pop stick or drinking straw
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue or sticky tape
  • Paper or cardboard

If you don’t have a printer or you want to create your own patterns, you can just draw them straight onto paper or cardboard and cut out and glue on.

Get started

  1. Print out a template (colour or black and white).
  2. Colour or paint each of the body parts.
  3. Allow to dry if painted and cut out the template pieces.
  4. Using the finished giraffe image as your guide, glue the large rectangular piece (body) on first to cover the toilet roll.
Note: Depending on the size of your toilet roll you may need to increase the size of the rectangle for the body slightly, or cut a small strip off the side if it is too big.
  5. Glue or tape the head and neck to the paddle pop stick or straw. Then attach this to the inside of the roll.
  6. Glue on the chest piece, legs and arms.
  7. Fold the tail in half and glue together so it looks coloured on each side, then fold tab and glue to the toilet paper roll.
