He's breastfeed and putting on plenty of weight. He sleeps pretty well at night he still wakes at the 40 min mark but after that he will sleep between 5-7 hours depending on how much sleep he gets during the day then a 2.5 - 3 hour sleep after that. Also when he does wake at naps he doesn't cry for about 5-10 minutes I have tried leaving him to re-settle but he continues to cry.

Answer: Hi, This is a common situation, it's reassuring that he's thriving and this is unlikely to be an issue with his feeding if his weight gain is good. Are you offering him both sides when you feed him? If not, perhaps doing this would make a difference to the length of his sleeps. Many babies of this age wake after one sleep cycle and it's hard to get them to resettle. It's good that you're not picking him up the moment he wakes but if he's crying then it's reasonable to go to him and soothe and comfort him. He's too little to modify his behaviour as a result of how he's settled. You're likely to find that he will extend his sleeping periods if you're consistent with what you're doing. The tummy rubbing and shshing is good, try not to resort to picking him up the moment he cries. If you can encourage him to resettle himself rather than rely on you to do this for him every time it's going to save you lots of energy in the coming months. You could also try wrapping or swaddling him in a light muslin or cotton wrap, perhaps he's waking himself up. And check the Huggies site for more comprehensive information about responsive settling management for his age and stage. Best Jane
